Introduction
As AI crawlers transition from fetching plain HTML to parsing dense structural graphs, a standardized protocol emerged: llms.txt.
What is llms.txt
Similar to how robots.txt instructs classic search engine spiders on access restrictions, llms.txt is a Markdown file placed at the root of a domain. It explicitly acts as an ingest-optimized manifest, pointing Large Language Models to high-value informational endpoints.
How it works
When an agent like ChatGPT or Claude accesses your domain via retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) or standard web crawling, it checks root/llms.txt. Based on the Markdown payload, it can skip rendering heavy Javascript frontend frameworks and directly ingest your key articles, documentation, or pricing tables.
Benefits for AI SEO
It cuts through the noise. AI SEO (or GEO) heavily penalizes disorganized DOMs. Providing an llms.txt gives you a direct semantic injection into the LLM context limits.
